 Smart Response Systems

Before Starting

Important Lessons we have Learned

- Question sets can only be 40 questions or less.

- Smart Response units will automatically turn off after 20 minutes of inactivity

Installing the Software

You must install the software BEFORE Using the Smart Response Units

http://smarttech.com/us/Support/Browse+Support/Download+Software

Smart Response Toolbar

When you launch the notebook software you will get a message asking if you want the Smart Response Toolbar installed- Click Yes. You should now see the Senteo Tab in your Notebook software and the toolbar in the Windows Task bar at the bottom of your computer screen.

Components of the SMART Response System

Clicker- Students use the clickers to submit their answers

Receiver- The receiver plugs into your computer via a USB cable and sends information between the computer and the clickers

Notebook Software- The notebook software is used to create the assessments

Teacher Tools Software- The Teacher Tools software collects the data from your classes and allows you to view it multiple ways

Setting up the System Before the Assessments

Connecting the Smart Response Unit Receiver

  • Connect the blue receiver to any available USB port on the computer (I recommend the front ports)
  • You should get a message at the bottom of the screen that says that new hardware is being installed
  • Wait a few minutes for the install to finish
  • Name the receiver. You only have about 7 characters or so for the receiver name. (To see the name of a receiver- go to Teacher Tools, Devices, My Receiver)

Make sure the receiver is located somewhere in the room where it can be seen by the clickers.  This allows the radio waves to have an unimpeded path between the receiver and the clickers.

The receivers find the classes that are active on the computer they are connected to. This allows them to be  interchangeable between computers.  All data is stored on the teacher computer. In order for a receiver to work and recognize student log-ins, the teacher has to sign in and turn on that class. If you change the receiver to another computer, it will recognize the data on that computer.

Creating a SMART Teacher File

If you have never used the Smart Response Systems before, be sure to open the Teacher Tools software and create a Teacher File.  This is the file that will store all student assessment data, so be sure to save it to a location that is being backed up.

Adding a Class

  • From the Teacher Tools application, Click the green/white plus sign to Add a Class
  • Give the class a name and enter the needed information.
  • Click Add.

(If the icon for Teacher Tools is not on your desktop, you can go to Response> Teacher Tools in the Menu bar of the Smart Notebook software)

Adding Students

In the Teacher Tools application once you have created a class, then you can add students.

  • Import from an excel file (Note: the columns in the spreadsheet will need to match the fields in the student information tab  The fields include, Student ID, First Name, Last Name, and email address which is optional)  Also, the file will need to be saved as a 97-2003 Word document.

  • Or- go to the Students Tab and enter them individually.  You will need to enter their student ID number (NCWise Number)  All students need to have a unique ID number.
  • Click Add and then type in the student information.  Click the Tab key to advance through the spreadsheet.

You can add tags to students such as Honors, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, etc.  This will help you later on as you run reports if you need to see similarities or differences between groups of students.

  • Click Next Student to continue adding more students to the class

Types of SMART Notebook Pages

Content Page- These are your typical notebook pages with information on them

Title Page- Creates a question set and lets the software know that what follows will be questions

Question Page- Pages that are set with the question templates.  Question choices include true/false, yes/no, multiple choice, multiple answer, number/fraction/decimal, text.

Quick Steps for Creating an Assessment

  1. Create the Title Page
  2. Add Question Pages or Content Pages
  3. End the Question Set

Creating A Title Page

Questions are created right in the Notebook software from either the Senteo tab or the button bar at the top of the screen.  The notebook software recognizes SMART Response question sets only after the title page is inserted into the notebook, so that should always be your first step when creating an assessment.

  • Click the SMART Response Tab in the Notebook Software and click Title Page

  • Fill in the information that you want on the Title Page (It can always be changed later)
  • Click Add

Note that the assessment can be inserted in the middle of a Notebook file or at the end of a group of content pages.  The Title Page is the start of the assessment so just be sure to add that into the Notebook before your Question pages.

Adding Questions

There are several ways to add a question

  • Click Response > Insert Question from the main menu bar at the top of the screen
  • On the Response Tab, click the icon for the question type you want to insert
  • After Adding your Title, click the Next Steps button in the Response Tab, then click Add a Question to the Next Page

Once you have added the question:

  • Choose the type of question you would like to insert into the notebook (True/False, Yes/No, Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer, Number/Fraction/Decimal, or Text questions are the options.)
  • The wizard will continue to walk you through the process of adding the question, choosing the right answers, choosing a point value, and then adding the question to the notebook.
  • Continue to add questions to your notebook.
  • Just like students can be tagged by categories, questions can be tagged too.  You might consider tagging them by objective, or class so that you can find them easily, interchange them, etc.

Adding media to questions:

Just like on a Content page, graphics, sounds, etc. can be added to Question pages.  This will help to jazz up your assessments or can help students answer questions that rely on an image like a graph, diagram, etc. for as part of the question.

Content Pages can be added in between Question Pages.  Just be aware that the SMART Response units will turn off after being inactive for about 20 minutes so if you do add content pages, make sure that they will not interfere with the data collecting part of the assessments.

Importing Existing Questions

Questions can also be imported from a Microsoft Word document.

  • From the menu bar, go to Response> Import Questions> Microsoft Word
  • Make sure your questions are numbered and have answer choices in order for them to be imported properly. Take a look at the format of the question in the Notebook software before trying to import a question from another file.
  • Questions can only be imported from Word 97-2003 documents
  • Sometimes graphics that are associated with questions end up on the wrong page after the import.  Always go back and review the questions to make sure they imported correctly.

Setting answers for imported questions:

If you import questions, then you will need to make sure to set the answer choices for each question.  The easiest way to do this is to go to Response > Set All Answers from the menu bar.
